| Municipality of Laško |
|
 |
The Municipality of Laško is situated about the Lower Savinja River, which divides the eastern and western Posavje Hills. With its 197 square kilometres of surface area and a little over 14,000 inhabitants Laško is one of the largest, though sparsely populated, municipalities in Slovenia.

In terms of administration and government, the municipality is divided into nine local communities. The chief administrative body is the municipal council comprising 23 members. While the municipality is represented and managed by the mayor, elected directly by the members of the municipality, the executive power is held by the municipal administration headed by a director.

The geographic, administrative and cultural centre of the municipality is the town of Laško, which is also the economic hub of the Lower Savinja Basin.
The first written source mention of Laško as a market town dates back to November 7, 1227. In remembrance of this entry in a document by Leopold VI, Duke of Austria, the municipality celebrates November 7 as its holiday.

The history of Laško is inseparably bound to coal mining, brewing and spa tourism. The coal mine, which had a significant impact on the progress of the area in the past, has been closed for quite some time. Nowadays, the most important economic activity is the brewing industry, which has been developing and imparting a unique impression on the town as well as the municipality for more than 150 years. In Slovenia and around Europe, Laško is also well-known for spa tourism; its thermal and medicinal springs are part of a tradition of promoting health and well being.

The beautiful and varied landscape, together with the friendly and hospitable local people, ensure you a pleasant stay in our midst.
