General geographical data about the Municipality of Laško

The Municipality of Laško is situated at the lower stream of the Savinja River which divides Posavsko hribovje (the Posavje highlands) into west and east; to the latter belongs also Kozjansko. Posavsko hribovje belongs to the subalpine highlands. Laško and its surroundings belong to the west-central part of Slovenia. This part has a characteristic subpanonian temperate continental temperature regime. The mean January temperature drops a bit under 0°C. The mean July temperature does not rise up to 20°C. Winters are therefore cool, summers warm, springs an falls are temperate warm and fresh. Especially in the summer days are cloudless, in the fall and the winter they are clouded. For the valley on the Savinja River the anticyclonal fog is typical. Average amount of precipitation is 1169,3 mm; the volume of precipitation is the highest in July and November. In summers showers are frequent, in falls long-term rainfalls are typical. Snowfalls are typical for the period from the second half of October to mid-April.

The Savinja River has in Laško the snow-rain regime. The spring maximum results from snow melting and precipitations, the autumn maximum results from long-term and heavy rainfalls.  Watercourses have in the summer low water level because of a high evaporation, in the winter the water level is low because of low liquid and solid precipitations. Extremely high waters have already caused a heavy damage in the Municipality of Laško.

Higher positions are covered with forests, on lower plateaus, peaks and sunny side gentle slopes forests were mainly cut down. On clearings developed small villages or secluded farms. Forest encompasses over one half of the area. Mixed forests encompass the biggest part of the municipality; deciduous trees prevail. Among the tree species pine and beech prevail. Wider landscape is famed for its Alpine flora, some rare endemic species and protected flowering plants.

Laško has about 4500 inhabitants and comprises an area of 197 km2, the number of inhabitants in Municipality of Laško has been amounted for a number of years to more than 14.000 inhabitants. Municipality of Laško consists of 85 settlements and 9 local communities. The birth rate has been decreasing for a number of years, the population has been ageing just like elsewhere in Slovenia.
